MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Muskogee Athletics announced the 2021 varsity football schedule on Thursday.

The Roughers 2021 campaign will begin with three non-district showdowns with Arkansas opponents.

The season will kick off September 3, 2021 at Indian Bowl as Muskogee hosts the Bentonville West Wolverines. The Wolverines with a 6-5 record in 2020 saw their season end due to a COVID-19 outbreak during the opening round of the Arkansas Class 7A state tournament.

A trip east to Rogers, Ark. will follow on Sept. 10 versus the Rogers Mounties. The Mounties, 6-3 in 2020, lost in the opening round of the Class 7A Playoffs. The Mounties will be led by a new head coach entering the 2021 season after the retirement of Mike Loyd. Muskogee Head Coach Travis Hill served as an assistant coach for Loyd at Northeast Oklahoma A&M during the Norseman 1991 NJCAA National Championship team.

Non-district play concludes as Arkansas Class 6A defending State Champion Greenwood travels to Muskogee on Sept. 17. The Bulldogs captured its 10th State Championship, all since 2000, on the way to a 14-0 record in 2000 marking the fourth undefeated season in school history. Greenwood will pursue its fourth state title in five years in 2021.

District action will get underway with a road trip to Putnam City West on Sept. 24. The Roughers match-up with the Patriots was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols during the 2020 season.

Muskogee Homecoming will see the Sand Springs Sandites visit Indian Bowl on October 1. Muskogee holds a 23-7 all-time record against Sand Springs. The last time the two squads met in the Indian Bowl the Roughers roughed up the Sandites 54-6 in 2019.

A week later on Oct. 8, Muskogee will travel to Bartlesville to face the Bruins. The contest will be the 76th all-time between the Roughers and Bruins with Muskogee holding a 45-27-3 all-time record.

Class 6A-II Runner-Up Choctaw will visit Muskogee on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Indian Bowl. The Yellowjackets fell in the 2020 Class 6A-II 17-14 to Bixby. The first-ever meeting between Muskogee and Choctaw was in the opening round of the 2019 playoffs which the Yellowjackets won 29-21.

The reigning Class 6A-II State Champion Bixby Spartans host Muskogee on Oct. 22. Bixby has won six gold balls since Class 6A was split into two divisions seven years ago. The Spartans have won 36 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 season.
The final road game of the regular season will be up the Muskogee Turnpike to Tulsa as the Roughers face Booker T. Washington on Oct. 29 at S.E. Williams Stadium. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the 2020 contest between the Hornets and Roughers was canceled.

The regular season will conclude right where it began for the Roughers at home hosting Ponca City on Nov. 5, 2021. The two teams saw their 2020 game canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Roughers will participate in two scrimmages for 2021 the first hosted by the Jenks Trojans on Aug. 20 and the second hosted by the Tahlequah Tigers on Aug. 26.
